Refrigerator Water Filter Compatibility Finder
Enter your refrigerator model number below to find your exact, verified-compatible replacement filter.
Refrigerator water filters aren’t universal, and the wrong cartridge can leak or not fit at all. This tool matches your refrigerator model or filter part number (like RPWFE, DA29-00020B or LT1000P) to a verified-compatible replacement.

Prices and availability vary. Check the model printed on your own cartridge before buying.

Compatibility here is checked against manufacturer specs and cross-reference data. A filter that “should” fit can still cause slow water, leaks or a filter light that won’t reset, so only confirmed matches are listed.
Coverage includes GE, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, and Maytag, spanning hundreds of model numbers across each brand’s product lines.

How Do You Replace a Refrigerator Water Filter?
Most models follow the same basic process: shut off the water supply, twist or pull out the old filter, insert the new one, and run a few gallons through to flush carbon dust before drinking.
Exact steps vary by brand and model, and the guides above cover Samsung, HAF-QIN, LG LT1000P, Whirlpool EDR1RXD1 and Frigidaire WF3CB in detail. The general process:
- Locate the filter housing. It’s typically inside the refrigerator compartment (upper right) for French-door models, or behind the base grille for side-by-side models.
- Remove the old filter: most twist a quarter-turn counterclockwise and pull straight out; push-button models release when pressed in.
- Check the code printed on the old filter to confirm your replacement matches before installing.
- Insert the new filter and turn clockwise until it locks, or push until it clicks into place.
- Run water through the dispenser for 2 to 4 minutes to clear air and carbon fines before drinking.
- Reset the filter indicator light on your model’s control panel. People often skip this, which is why the light stays on after a correct replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I replace my refrigerator water filter?
Most manufacturers recommend every 6 months, or sooner if water flow noticeably slows or the indicator light signals a change. Some higher-capacity filters are rated for up to 300 gallons rather than a fixed time period.
Can I use a compatible filter instead of the genuine OEM filter?
Compatible third-party filters exist for most codes, but fit and filtration vary by maker. Cheaper filters can fall short of OEM housing specs, and a seal that doesn’t match the filter head closely can leak or filter less even when it clicks into place. NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 marks on the packaging are one of the better signs a compatible filter was tested for material safety and its reduction claims. FilterFitNow doesn’t test units physically. A match is confirmed only after checking documented dimensions and fitment against OEM housing specs, certification records and published flow-rate data. Be wary of a listing with no certification information at all. Our generic vs OEM refrigerator water filter guide walks through the three checks.
Are refrigerator water filters universal?
No. Most built-in refrigerator water filters are made for a specific filter head, so a cartridge that looks similar can leak or fail to seat. Match your refrigerator model to a verified filter with the finder above rather than going by brand alone. Some external inline filters install on the water supply line instead of in the fridge’s filter housing and are not tied to a refrigerator model, but they are a different product, and some fridges need a bypass plug in the empty housing (see our bypass plug guide). If you are weighing a non-OEM cartridge, see generic vs OEM refrigerator water filters.
What happens if I don’t replace my water filter on schedule?
Water flow slows, filtering drops off as the carbon saturates, and on some models the ice maker stops once the filter is far enough overdue. The carbon can only bind so much chlorine, taste and odor; after that, contaminants the filter is rated to reduce pass through even though water still flows. Many fridges track usage and show a filter warning well before flow stops, so act on the warning light. A badly overdue filter can also let bacteria grow in media that is no longer filtering, which is why manufacturers recommend replacing on schedule.
Why is my filter light still on after I replaced it?
Most models need a manual reset after a filter change, usually a button hold or a menu option on the display panel. A light that stays on is the most common reason people think they installed the wrong filter. Samsung owner? See our Samsung Water Filter Light reset guide by panel type → for the exact steps.
What if my exact filter code or model number isn’t listed here?
Matches are only published once verified. If your code isn’t here, try the brand guides linked on this page, or check back as coverage grows. The filter code is usually printed on the old cartridge or on a label inside the filter housing, not on the fridge’s main rating plate, so look there first. If you only have the refrigerator’s model number, most manufacturer support sites will look up the correct filter part number for free.

Refrigerator Water Filter Bypass Plugs
Running your fridge without a filter installed usually needs a bypass plug to keep the water line sealed. Which one you need depends on the housing type, not just the brand.
