Frigidaire Water Filter Light Won’t Reset? How to Reset It
The Frigidaire water filter reset is the same short step on every current model we checked: press and hold the Water Filter button for 3 seconds after the new filter is in. The light doesn’t clear on its own when you swap the cartridge, which is why it is still red after a filter change. Where the button sits depends on your fridge, so find your layout below.
Short answer: install the new filter, flush the water, then press and hold Water Filter (some models label it “Reset Water Filter”) for 3 seconds. The status goes from red Replace back to green Good.
How to Reset the Water Filter Light, by Model Type
These steps come from Frigidaire’s own owner’s guides for three current model lines:
| Your fridge | Where to press | What the manual says |
|---|---|---|
| Frigidaire Gallery French door (e.g. GRFS2853A) | Water Filter button on the ice and water dispenser panel (the main control shows “Hold To Reset”) | Press and hold for 3 seconds; the display changes from red to green (owner’s guide) |
| Frigidaire side-by-side (e.g. FRSS2623) | Water Filter on the dispenser control; the side-door display shows Good, Order or Replace | Hold Water Filter for 3 seconds to reset to Good (owner’s guide) |
| Frigidaire French door with an inside or door display (e.g. FRFS2823) | Reset Water Filter button | Press and hold for 3 seconds to clear the Replace Water Filter warning (owner’s guide) |
Not sure which you have? Your model number is on a label inside the fresh food compartment. Each model’s page on Frigidaire.com links its Complete Owner’s Guide; search the guide for “Water Filter” to see your exact layout. Older Frigidaire models can use a different button arrangement, so check their guide rather than guessing.
The Full Filter Change, in the Order Frigidaire Gives It
The reset is the last step. Frigidaire’s replacement steps for the PurePour filter are:
- Turn off the ice maker.
- Push on the face of the old filter to release it, then slide it straight out.
- Slide the new cartridge in until it stops, then push firmly until it clicks into place.
- Press a glass against the water dispenser. Spurts and sputters are normal while air purges.
- After the first glass, keep flushing for about 4 minutes.
- Turn the ice maker back on.
- Press and hold the Water Filter reset button for 3 seconds. When the display changes from red to green, the status is reset.
The current models in these guides take the PurePour PWF-1 filter (part number FPPWFU01). Frigidaire says to replace it every 6 months; the Gallery guide also lists a rated capacity of 125 gallons.
Light Still Red After You Held It?
- Held the wrong button. Many Frigidaire models have both Water Filter and Air Filter buttons, each reset separately. Holding Air Filter won’t clear the water warning.
- Let go too early. It needs a full 3 seconds.
- Display asleep or locked. Some models dim the display after a short time, and a locked display ignores changes. Wake it first, and unlock it if the lock light is on (hold Lock for 3 seconds on models that have one).
- Filter not seated. Frigidaire’s troubleshooting list says to remove and reinstall the filter if water dispenses slowly or not at all. Push until it clicks.
If the water is cloudy or has black specks right after the change, that is usually carbon dust and trapped air from a new cartridge; see cloudy or black water after a filter change. If water is slow, see dispenser slow after a filter change.
Frigidaire Air Conditioner Filter Light
If your “filter reset” light is on a Frigidaire room air conditioner rather than a fridge, it’s a different system. Per Frigidaire’s room AC support article, that light comes on after 250 hours of operation: unplug the unit, wash the filter, let it dry, plug it back in and press Filter Reset.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do you hold the Frigidaire water filter button?
Three seconds, according to all three Frigidaire owner’s guides we checked. The status changes from red Replace to green Good when it has reset.
Does the light reset itself when I change the filter?
No. Frigidaire’s guides make the reset a separate step after the filter change and flush.
What does “Order” mean on the filter status?
It’s the early warning: the filter is nearing the end of its life, so order a replacement. “Replace” means change it now.
