GE & Whirlpool Under Sink Water Filter Replacement Guide

“Under sink water filter” covers two genuinely different product families, and mixing them up is the most common mistake we see. GE’s under-sink systems are simple dual-flow drinking water filters with one twist-and-lock cartridge set. Whirlpool’s under-sink systems are multi-stage reverse osmosis (RO) setups with three separate replacement parts that each wear out on a different schedule. This guide identifies which parts fit which system, so you’re not guessing from a part number that looks similar.

GE Under Sink Filtration Systems

System ModelReplacement Filter
GXSL55R, GXSV65R, GNSV70R, GXK285JBL, GXK295JNNFQK2J (dual-flow filter set, 2-pack)

FQK2J is a twist-and-lock, no-tools cartridge set rated to reduce lead, select pharmaceuticals, select VOCs, and chlorine taste/odor, filtering down to 0.5 microns. Replace every 6 months for rated performance.

Whirlpool Under Sink Reverse Osmosis Systems

System ModelReplacement Parts
WHER25, WHAROS5, WHAPSRO, WHADUS5, WHED20WHEERF (pre-filter) + WHEEDF (carbon post-filter) + WHEERM (membrane)

Unlike GE’s single-cartridge-set design, Whirlpool’s RO systems need three parts replaced on three different schedules: WHEERF (sediment pre-filter) twice a year, WHEEDF (granular activated carbon polishing filter) once a year, and WHEERM (the actual reverse-osmosis membrane that does the contaminant rejection) roughly every two years. A full annual service means replacing WHEERF twice and WHEEDF once, with WHEERM inspected and replaced on its own longer cycle.

How This Differs From a Whole House System

Under-sink systems like these only filter water at one point of use — your kitchen faucet or a dedicated drinking-water tap. They don’t touch water used for showers, laundry, or other fixtures. If you’re trying to filter all the water entering your home, that’s a different product category entirely — see our whole house filter sizing guide and our GE, Culligan & American Plumber whole house compatibility guide.

How We Verified This

  • GE Appliances’ own parts specification pages for each system model listed above
  • Whirlpool Water Solutions’ own product documentation for the WHER25/WHAROS5 family and its replacement parts
  • Cross-checked against independent retailer listings for the same part numbers

These are genuine manufacturer part numbers, confirmed against the sources above. We haven’t yet confirmed a cross-brand aftermarket replacement for either system the way we have for the GE/Culligan/American Plumber whole house cartridge — when we do, we’ll add it here rather than guess. Frequently Asked Questions

Do GE and Whirlpool under-sink filters use the same replacement cartridge?
No. They’re entirely different systems — GE’s is a single dual-flow cartridge set, Whirlpool’s WHER25 family is a three-part reverse osmosis system. A cartridge from one won’t fit the other’s housing.

How often should I replace my GE under-sink filter?
Every 6 months for the FQK2J filter set, per GE’s rated performance window.

How often should I replace my Whirlpool RO filters?
WHEERF (pre-filter) twice a year, WHEEDF (carbon post-filter) once a year, and WHEERM (membrane) roughly every two years.

Is my under-sink filter the same as my whole-house filter?
No. Under-sink systems filter water at one tap only. Whole house systems filter everything entering your home at the main line. Check our whole house filter guide if you’re not sure which one you have.
