LG Washer Drain Pump Filter: Where It Is and How to Clean It
On LG front-load washers and washer-dryer combos, the drain pump filter is behind a small access panel at the bottom front, usually on the left. LG top-load washers don’t have one. LG recommends cleaning it once a month.
Does my LG washer have a drain filter?
Only if it is a front loader or a combo unit. LG’s support page says the drain pump filter is not available on top-load washers. If you own a top loader and can’t find a filter, that’s why.
The filter catches lost buttons, coins and lint before they reach the drain pump. When it clogs, the washer can drain slowly.
How to clean it
- Make sure the washer is empty and turned off, and that there’s no visible water left in the drum.
- Put a shallow pan or tray on the floor by the access panel.
- Open the access panel on the lower front left by pulling its tab down and out. On some models it’s on the right side of the service cover. Behind it you’ll see a large round stopper (the filter) and a small drain hose.
- Pull the small drain hose out into the pan, carefully. Pulling it too far can kink it. Remove its plug and let the water drain completely.
- Plug the hose again and push it back into place.
- Turn the pump filter counterclockwise to remove it. Keep a towel ready, because a little more water will come out.
- Pull out anything caught in it, plus lint and debris. Wash it by hand with a soft brush or sponge.
- Put the filter back in its slot and turn it clockwise until it stops. Refit the access panel.
Draining the small hose first keeps most of the water in the pan instead of on the floor.
How often
LG recommends cleaning the drain pump filter monthly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wash the filter in the dishwasher?
LG’s instructions are to wash it by hand with a soft brush or sponge, so do that.
The filter won’t turn. What now?
Make sure you drained the small hose first, then turn counterclockwise firmly with a towel for grip. If it still won’t move, check your model’s owner’s manual or contact LG rather than forcing it.
My top-load LG washer drains slowly. Where’s the filter?
There isn’t one to clean. LG says the drain pump filter is only on front loaders and combo units, so for a top loader, check the drain hose for kinks or clogs and see your owner’s manual.
