Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Filter Stuck: How to Get It Out
With a Whirlpool refrigerator water filter stuck in its housing, the right fix depends on which of four release designs you have, and Whirlpool publishes different steps for each. Work out where your filter sits and how it releases first. Then follow the matching steps below, and stop before you reach for real force.
Which Whirlpool Filter Release Do You Have?
Look at your refrigerator rather than the filter’s model number. Whirlpool describes four designs, split by where the filter sits and how it comes out:
| Where the filter sits | How it releases | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Base grille (bottom front) | Quarter-turn cap | Quarter-turn steps |
| Base grille (bottom front) | Push button | Push-button steps |
| Inside the refrigerator | A compartment door that opens and pops the filter out | Pop-out door steps |
| Inside the refrigerator | Push button or pull tab | Push/pull tab steps |
Base Grille Filter With a Quarter-Turn Cap
Normally you turn the filter a quarter turn to the left and pull it straight out; on some models the cap comes off separately. If it will not turn:
- Place a piece of cloth over the filter cap for grip.
- Lock standard pliers onto the cap and turn it a quarter turn.
- If it still will not move, unplug the refrigerator and remove the bottom grille for better access.
- Pull the filter straight out once it releases.

Base Grille Filter With a Push Button
Normally you push the button on the base grille all the way in until the filter disengages, then remove it. If the filter stays put:
- Press and hold the button while the filter is ejected.
- If it still will not come out, unplug the refrigerator and remove the bottom grille.
- Press the button firmly and check whether the filter moves. If it moves slightly, push the filter back in and press the button again.
Filter Inside the Fridge With a Pop-Out Door
On these models a compartment door opens and the filter pops out. If it is stuck, Whirlpool’s guidance is:
- Close the compartment door and open it again, making sure it opens fully.
- Turn off the water to the refrigerator and purge some of the water from the water line, for example by running the dispenser.
Filter Inside the Fridge With a Push Button or Pull Tab
If the shelf below the filter is in the way, remove it for room. Then turn the filter counterclockwise, to the left, and pull it straight out.
What Not to Do
Whirlpool warns that applying too much pressure or force to the water filter could break it or damage the internal water system. Its stuck-filter steps stop at a cloth and standard pliers. If the filter still will not move, or you can see a cracked cap or housing, the next step is Whirlpool support or an appliance technician, not more force.
Once it is out, confirm the replacement fits. Match your model with our Whirlpool water filter finder, check the EDR1RXD1 compatibility guide, or read our Whirlpool bypass plug guide if you would rather leave the housing empty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Whirlpool refrigerator water filter stuck?
Whirlpool’s steps point to a few likely culprits, depending on the design. On push-button filters the button may not have been pressed all the way in. On compartment-style filters the door may not be fully open, or there may be water pressure in the line that needs to be purged. On quarter-turn filters the cap may just need more grip than a bare hand gives. Identify which of the four Whirlpool release designs you have, then use the matching steps rather than forcing the filter.
Do I need to unplug my Whirlpool refrigerator to remove a stuck filter?
For a stuck base grille filter, yes. Whirlpool’s steps for both the quarter-turn and push-button base grille filters say to unplug the refrigerator and remove the bottom grille for better access before trying again. For a filter inside the refrigerator, the steps instead call for turning off the water and purging some water from the line.
Can I use pliers on a stuck Whirlpool water filter?
On a quarter-turn base grille filter, Whirlpool says to place a cloth over the filter cap, lock standard pliers onto the cap and turn it a quarter turn. Whirlpool also warns that too much pressure or force could break the filter or damage the water system, so use steady pressure and stop if the cap starts to deform.
What if the push button on my Whirlpool filter won’t eject the filter?
Whirlpool says to press and hold the button while the filter is ejected. If that does not work, unplug the refrigerator, remove the bottom grille, press the button firmly and check whether the filter moves. If it moves slightly, push it back in and press the button again.
Will my Whirlpool fridge still dispense water with the filter out?
It depends on the model. Some Whirlpool refrigerators bypass the filter automatically and keep dispensing, while others need a bypass plug in the empty housing. Remove the filter and press the dispenser to see which you have; our Whirlpool bypass plug guide covers the part numbers.
