GE Microwave Reset Filter Light Won’t Go Off? How to Reset It

On GE and GE Profile over-the-range microwaves, the Reset Filter light is a reminder, not a sensor. It comes on every 6 months whether the filter is dirty or not. Replace the charcoal filter, then press and hold the words Reset Filter for 3 seconds and the light goes off.

How to reset the light

  1. Replace the charcoal filter (see below).
  2. Put your finger on the words Reset Filter on the control panel.
  3. Press and hold for 3 seconds. The light turns off and the 6-month timer starts again.

That is the procedure from GE Appliances support for select GE and GE Profile over-the-range models. The light does not detect a dirty filter. It is a timed function only.

If the light won’t go off

  1. Disconnect power to the microwave for a minute or two, either by unplugging it or by switching off its breaker or fuse.
  2. Restore power and check whether the light has cleared.
  3. If it still won’t clear, GE says the microwave needs service.

Hold for the full 3 seconds. A quick tap does not reset it.

Which filter the light is about

Over-the-range microwaves usually have two kinds of filter, and the light is about the charcoal one:

  • Charcoal filter: removes odors when the microwave recirculates air back into the kitchen. GE says to change it about every 6 to 12 months, when it looks dirty or discolored, or when the Reset Filter light comes on. It can’t be cleaned, only replaced.
  • Metal grease filters: the mesh filters on the underside that catch grease from the cooktop. These are washable. GE’s owner’s manual (for example the JVM6170) says to soak and swish them in hot water with detergent, avoid ammonia (it darkens the metal), then rinse and dry before putting them back.

Range hood filters work the same way. See how to clean a range hood filter and range hood filter replacement.

Finding the right replacement charcoal filter

GE uses several different charcoal filters across its microwave models, so look up your microwave’s model number before you buy. Search that model number on GE’s parts site to get the matching filter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to replace the filter before resetting the light?

No, the button resets the timer either way. But the light exists to remind you that 6 months have passed, so resetting it without checking the charcoal filter just hides the reminder until next time.

Why does the light come back after exactly six months?

Because it is a timer. GE says the reminder lights every 6 months and does not measure how dirty the filter actually is.

My microwave vents outside. Do I need a charcoal filter?

The charcoal filter matters when the microwave recirculates air into the room. If yours is ducted outside, check your owner’s manual for whether your model needs one, then reset the light the same way.
